The term internet marketing is not something you hear much nowadays. It’s currently known as digital marketing. However, there are certain things you must know about its history and how it evolved.
What Is Internet Marketing?
Before you had SEO and all those other buzzwords and terms, you had internet marketing. That is sort of the legacy term for “digital marketing.” Internet marketing is basically anything that is on the internet.
Back in the Day
So, before, it was links, social media, maybe Myspace, and stuff like that, putting you on top site websites. You had something called top sites. You would Google “best sites for chocolate in Iowa,” for example, and you would have results with the top five best websites in Iowa for chocolate or Dragon Ball Z or whatever it might be.
This is where this top five things type of SEO ranking technique came from because there were top sites, and this was really the core of internet marketing, together with radio, where they would say stuff like “go on my website” if it is www.yellowpages.com or something like that. Even that was considered internet marketing because you sent people to your website, and then from there, you would sell.
Links Really Do Matter
The links between all the other websites matter. That is why backlinks and linking and SEO are so important because it is just connections.
It is the same when somebody you know recommends you and sends you somewhere by referral. A link is a referral. So, internet marketing is the World Wide Web. It is called a web for a reason; it is a spider web, with all the links between. That is why it is called that.
