Considering the immense legacy Cutts has in the search engine marketing and development of internet guidelines, and we bring you the story of once Google’s rising star and mastermind of SEO.

Meet Matt Cutts

Matt Cutts is an esteemed American software engineer, famously known as the former United States Digital Service Administrator. His most famous role is as a member of the search quality team on search engine optimization issues and as former head of the webspam team at Google.

He holds a Ph.D. in computer graphics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MSc from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a B.S. in mathematics and computer science from the University of Kentucky. He proudly emphasizes that he wrote the first version of SafeSearch, which is Google’s family filter, and worked as the head of Google’s webspam team for many years.

During his career, as we mentioned, from January 2017 until April 2021, Matt was the administrator of the U.S. Government, which is, in his words, explained as the group of geeks that helped rescue healthcare.gov.

The “Cookie Guy” and His Early Work

Matt is mainly known for his work on Google. During his time in this company, he has been working on developing programs and regulations to prevent the spam culture that has been proven to manipulate rankings. Cutt’s work at Google has been to stop spammers from manipulating Google’s rankings. This issue has been highly concerning, considering that this ranking controlled what 75% of internet users see on their pages. His work has been significant and interesting to a broader audience due to his means and approaches to fighting web spam which essentially explained how the entire web works. Cutts worked at the ads engineering group and SafeSearch, Google’s family filter, which he designed.

The Story Behind Nickname

Thanks to his outstanding work in Google, Matt earned his world-known nickname, “porn cookie guy.” The story behind it is linked to giving his wife’s homemade cookies to any Google who provided an example of unwanted pornography in the search results.

He has also been very effective in advising on using the Google search engine and related issues. He has been the voice, face, and brain associated with SEO. Turning back to 2003, Cutts updated and changed how on-page optimization works.

Before this, SEO was simply heavily usage of keywords. Part of this update covered adjusting rankings based on how often a page is clicked, by a perceived desire for new vs. older content, based on the traffic to a web page, and using linkages.

Matt’s Work With SEO

After Matt left a public position at Google in 2016, he joined  USDS in 2016 at the Department of Defense. From January 2017 to April 2021, Matt served as Administrator and was responsible for setting the overall direction and strategy for projects. From there on, he has been running his blog, and besides this, he has been immensely vocal about the importance of SEO and how developments in the IT sector impact it.

Matthew’s name has been linked to SEO marketing and practices that impact the SEO component. Over the years, he has presented strategies and ideas related to new digital developments and their direct impact on SEO and SEM.

In his own words, he has explained that “SEO” or “search engine optimization” should not only refer to building links or increasing rankings. Search engine optimization is something much bigger than that. SEO requires a person to have the ability to look at the big picture. I want to be #1 in Google is an ignorant statement. SEO is diverse and robust, delivering traffic from many different directions.

In one of his interviews, Matt explains that SEO is almost like anything you do in order to make a great site, primarily if you ensure that site is accessible. People sometimes view SEO as worthless, a shady practice used by criminals. This kind of view is very problematic, and therefore, SEO should be even more popular and additionally cautiously fixed to fit the best practices possible.

In one of his famous predictions and claims, he pointed out that some new trends do not impact SEO as much as we think. That is especially visible in the example of social media. This is one of the mistakes that Cutts noted web makers make. Additionally, he points out that the biggest mistake is having a website that is not crawlable. Crawlable in this sense means that many websites are made with Flash, which is not visible by Google, directly impacting the SEO performance.

Another mistake related to keywords, or their choice, significantly impacts the SEO component. It also helps when creating content and advertising it, including the title and description of pages.

Lately, Matt vocalizes that not using webmaster resources and learning about how Google works can be cardinal mistakes of any web developer.
